Always take expert advice in the particular state you want to start and register your business because different states have different rules. Local advocates know the best way out and they will be able to help you. |

We have a family business of automotive aftermarket in Ahmadabad, Gujarat. We tried to register the business, get water and electricity connection and register for trade outside the state/ country. It was easy for us to start the business because we took help of our sales tax consultant to get the registration process initiated. His guidance and the ‘right’ contacts he had facilitated the registration process. | My advice for others would be – go through an expert accountant or a lawyer who has an expertise in the domain of getting the business or a start up registered. Have all your documents in place for the process to be faster. It was pretty much easy for us to set up our media enterprise in Ahmadabad, Gujarat. We are a partnership firm called as – Videowala and mostly work for the Adani Group and make short films as a part for their Corporate Social Responsibility. We won the 62nd National Film Award for the year 2014 under Best Debut Film of a Director (Non-Feature) Category for our documentary – ‘Goonga Pehelwan’. We are a partnership firm and a partnership firm is one of the easiest to register. It took us just five days to register the business and did not drain out our energies. Hence we could better concentrate on our business. |
My advice to other start ups would be if you have no idea about the procedures involved and the paperwork, go through an accountancy firm or some legal experts. It was easy for my family to set up our medicines wholesale business. We tried to register our business, acquire land, register property, get permissions and licenses under labour laws, get building plan approved, get electricity connection, pay taxes, file returns under labour laws and tax laws. I would say it was easy for us to set up and register our business because we were ready to bribe the officials. In my opinion that is a given and probably is mandatory to get your work done. | My advice to other businessmen would be either be ready to bribe or have patience for the lengthy procedures and formalities in order to start and register your business or start up. |

I set up an IT firm in Jaipur, Rajasthan. According to me, the only issue I had with the registration process is the lack of information available for someone to start the business. Apart from registration, I also acquired land, and got permissions for labour and trading outside the state. However the rules of Excise Duty and Sales Tax is one hassle I face. I have to redesign the process according to the various needs of our clients. At times this becomes a problem. I registered Safomasi in 2012, when I set it up with my wife, and started it a year later. Signing the business up was the easy part. As a textile business, I also needed a big, clean space. That was really difficult. In fact, this current office is only the second location I took a look at – I did not want to look further and risk losing this one. It suits our needs. Overall, the process seemed complicated though. I wasn’t really involved in the set-up of the business myself. I handed down all the work to my accountant, who did it himself. In terms of the experience, it wasn’t a hassle to me personally, but I found the amount of paperwork required by the government to be too much, taxing and frankly, unnecessary. Moreover, there was no information available about the procedure online, so I didn’t know what the next step was and hence my accountant handled all of that. Hence like everyone even I had to go through a third party despite me having all the paperwork and documents in place. So there is registration fees involved and on the top of it there is this lawyers’ or accountants’ fees involved. If one has all their documents in place, he/ she should be able to independently register the start up and not required to go through a third party. I did not know any of the costs involved as well. They were nowhere to be found – not on the websites, nowhere. When I visited the government office, all kind of unnecessary questions were posed at me rather than asking relevant information pertaining to my business or documents. |
One has to learn how to deal with people. I’ve had different experiences with different people. I’d also advise them to conduct their business, keeping their finances in mind, and only take decisions that are financially sound.
