There was denial for commercial electric connection on freehold plots. They agreed later, after repeated requests and talking strictly in a stern tone. I needed to get commercial connection to another freehold plot and I am not sure whether I will be able to get that without paying bribe or not. Auditors also tell you a lot of rules at the time of inspection, seek monetary benefits to turn a blind eye. There is no website or one place where we can get a list of all the rules to be followed. The process of registering a firm is also ironical. They ask three guarantors who have been doing business for last couple of years (I think 3 or more) and have been filing returns timely. In case you do not have three guarantors you can also get a fixed deposit opened of 25,000 in the name of the firm and use that as the guarantee. Now the irony here is that hardly any bank would accept to open a fixed deposit in the name of the firm which is not yet registered. Since we did not know enough businessmen in Greater Noida, we visited a number of banks who refused to accept money and open a FD in the firm's name. Luckily I met a bank manager who understood and agreed to help. This is how we got a FD and hence were able to get the firm registered almost when we were about to lose hope. Another experience is that when two different states get involved, different taxes also get involved. This is applicable for goods being brought into Delhi from another state on C.S.T. We need to share a copy of bill with the Delhi client who then sends a D-form and only then can the goods be brought into Delhi with the bill and the D-form from the client. This form contains same information present on the bill i.e. - date, goods, quantity, vehicle registration number and the billed amount. This process can be managed if you bill electronically and share the documents via email. Doing the same manually will involve additional delays. I think GST might be a big step in resolving this issue. |

It was pretty much easy for us to set up our media enterprise in Ahmadabad, Gujarat. We are a partnership firm called as – Videowala and mostly work for the Adani Group and make short films as a part for their Corporate Social Responsibility. We won the 62nd National Film Award for the year 2014 under Best Debut Film of a Director (Non-Feature) Category for our documentary – ‘Goonga Pehelwan’. We are a partnership firm and a partnership firm is one of the easiest to register. It took us just five days to register the business and did not drain out our energies. Hence we could better concentrate on our business. |
My advice to other start ups would be if you have no idea about the procedures involved and the paperwork, go through an accountancy firm or some legal experts. Under Swatchh Bharat mission, the municipal corporations are supposed to build and operate public toilets and community toilets. Even after identification of land, the allocation process is not very clear at district levels. The MC should identify land and make it readily available for interested parties to built and operate toilets by CSR funds. There is no clear mechanism/process/instruction how to apply for land for building toilets. hence it took us more than 6 months to get land. |

I am from Muzzafarpur, Bihar. I recently started a new enterprise in the Development Sector. I tried to register a NGO (Social Enterprise). I would say that the services provided in terms of registering the NGO are not at all time bound. It could take any amount of time to get your NGO registered. More over, my experience was that there is no sense of accountability when it comes to the government procedures related to starting up a business or an enterprise. |
My advice to other people who want to have their own start ups would be that, since it is very difficult to start a venture in Bihar or even invest in Bihar, you should get your organization registered in any other state but not Bihar. |

In short, it was a nightmare. I tried to start a clothing brand late last year, thinking that I would conduct a fair business in Pune. I wanted to register my company legally, and pay my taxes duly, irrespective of how my business went. But after going through this procedure, I realised why people don't take the white route! It takes a ton of time to get everything sorted, and more so to roll out. Getting clearances from these babus was one thing, and sustaining the business entirely another. It seems like they have all the time in the world to harass us, but not to help us. I am thoroughly disillusioned with the state of the business sector in this country. Though my business is fairly successful now, I can never forget the hell I have been through to make it till here. I can only hope it is the not the same for others. |

I did not find it easy to set up my financial enterprise in Delhi. It took us a couple of months only to get the name of my company registered. Every time I submitted a name, it used to get rejected without any known reasons. It was very time-consuming, taxing and unnecessary. Only this step set me back by three months at least. Getting the trademark registered was a problem because I had to go through a lawyer. I fail to understand why couldn’t I find all the information myself and do it independently without involving extra costs. An entrepreneur abroad can do these things independently without taking anyone’s help. I could have saved a lot of money if I knew the procedures. |
Consult some expert who will help you out legally and also in financial matters. I think that’s the only way out because I couldn’t do everything on my own. |

I had a lot of problems starting my restaurant in Mumbai. It was not easy for me to start my business. I tried to register the property, get permissions and licenses under the labour laws. My restaurant serves alcohol and even has hookah. So for me it was all the more difficult. I had to run from pillar to post to get my permits in place. I also had to pay bribe in order ‘to get things done’ at a faster pace. Apart from that once my restaurant started, I had to tip off the policemen in order to keep my business going. Or else for whatever stupid reason and probably an invalid one, my restaurant would have been shut down permanently. This is my experience in Mumbai and I am not aware of other cities in India. The customers, vendors and clients are also at times indifferent. They don’t feel any remorse in wasting someone’s time, energy and indulge in petty cheating at the cost of others. I am sure such instances take place abroad as well but the magnitude would definitely be significantly lesser. |

Amazon operates in 13 countries worldwide. However, only amazon.in requires the seller to have a company registration certificate and a VAT certificate to even register as a seller. Make In India, my foot! Decided to sell on amazon.com. I'm very idealistic too. After reading all the replies on our website, I'm depressed and shattered. I don't think I can ever get myself to bribe someone. Don't have any connections too(even if I did, I don't think I would be very comfortable using them!). It was easy for my family to set up our medicines wholesale business. I have had 5 years of experience of helping my cousin in his medical shop In Vadodra itself. And I thought of opening my own. But it was not an easy task. After submitting a big bunch of documents, another requirement came over with 20 additional points which was not relevant to us. We appeared 5-6 times in order to settle the case and finally we had to carry 20 files and folders with us to show them few invoices of their consent. Then we needed something else to close the case as he was not able to find any fault in records. |

My experience was not good at all in terms of starting my business. There are officials who will not ask for bribes directly but by the way the whole system runs and procedures are delayed for some or the other reason, you are left with no other option. The documents to be submitted were so many. It is high time that we go paperless and make it easier not only for the officials but also for us. It will reduce the time period as well. |
